About

Evan Torner (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst) is an Assistant Professor of German Studies at the University of Cincinnati. He was previously the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in German at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA between 2013-14. He has published numerous articles on German film, and is currently working on a monograph A Century and Beyond: Critical Readings of German Science-Fiction Cinema. He is also the co-editor (with Henning Wrage) of The Handbook of East German Cinema: The DEFA Legacy (Walter de Gruyter, 2015) and co-editor (with Sky Arndt-Briggs, Barton Byg, and Andy Raeder) Travels and Travails: East German Cinema in the International Arena (Berghahn, 2015).

His work is based on four core “pillars” of interest:

• German Studies

• Film Studies

• Game Studies

• Electronic Music

These are underpinned by four secondary “pillars” of interest

• History

• Philosophy

• Postcolonial/cultural studies

• Aesthetics.
